3. “The Rainbow Snake”
Designed by Dutch artist Patries van Elsen, the gigantic mural’s name is inspired by the infamous 4-story Spuistraat landmark, The Snakehouse. Since 1983, the historic building has been a squatter’s paradise for Amsterdam’s creatives, who helped paint the multicolored serpent in 1987. According to Van Elsen, the artwork perfectly illustrates the power of color and light, exhibiting the specific functioning and irradiation of each color. Residents of The Snakehouse have since shaped the space into a creative hotspot, but the building’s current owners are forcing them to vacate.
