9. Vrankrijk

A stone’s throw away from The Snakehouse is the original squatter’s paradise, Vrankrijk. Built in 1875, the former carpentry workshop served as the home of Amsterdam’s counter-culture in the late ’80s and is now a social support center for the city’s various subcultures. The mural’s Lichtenstein typeface and comic book reference is a clear take on pop art, which gives off the effect of a real explosion. For a time, the 5-story building wore a badge of honor with the words “Still not loving the police.”
