Ai Weiwei: @Large
Alcatraz - San Francisco, CA
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has taken over what is usually a tourist-filled former prison off the shore of San Francisco to create seven site-specific installations for his exhibit @Large. The renowned artist’s exhibition deals with themes of human rights and freedom of expression. What’s really amazing about @Large is that Ai Weiwei was being detained by the Chinese government and had his passport revoked, so the artist wasn’t actually able to visit Alcatraz to plan the exhibit. Instead, he designed his installations remotely, using architectural models, films, and books about the site.
