Gorillaz wasn’t a band that originated on a cartoon series, but instead was formed from Blur frontman Damon Albarn’s imagination. The virtual band consisted of four animated members, including 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Albarn was the permanent voice of 2D while the other three band members were portrayed by a number of different musicians on each of the band’s four albums. Although they’ve only had a handful of live performances, the Gorillaz were creative in concealing the band members’ true identities by performing behind large projector screens that just showed their animated characters, and even by using Musion Eyeliner technology to create 3D holograms of the members playing on a live stage.
