Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
The last pick is always the toughest. That’s why serious collectors have entire homes devoted to nothing but their vinyl because once you start, it’s hard to stop. There’s an almost endless number of worthy albums we could have placed here, but ultimately, we had to go with the Beastie Boys’ second album, Paul’s Boutique.
If you take away anything from this, it’s that vinyl can often be great for allowing subtle details in music to shine through that would otherwise be drowned out in other formats. Incredibly, Paul’s Boutique contains over 100 samples, a number of samples that would be almost impossible to clear in 2014. As often as we had heard this album before we grabbed the vinyl version, we didn’t realize just how many subtle touches there are embedded throughout the project. Suddenly, you can hear that wood block percussion on the downbeat that you never did before. Sometimes you just want to put an album on and relax, and Paul’s Boutique delivers there as well, but if you want an album you can really obsess over, an album that will reveal more of itself with each listen, this is the one for you.
