5. DMZ

New York City is one of the most populated cities in the world, but not in the fictional world of DMZ, a comic book series by Brian Wood that puts the island of Manhattan in the middle of a post-war setting between the United States and the “Free States.” In this tale, Manhattan has turned into the “demilitarized zone,” hence “DMZ,” and is home to 400,000 homeless and holdouts left behind in the big evacuation. The plot focuses around the main character Matty Roth, but was famous for displaying one-off storylines with a street artist, local DJ and other characters in the corrupt area. The graphic novel mainly gains cool points for incorporating art, skate culture and the graffiti world into a visually creative and gritty journey of the comicverse.
