The genius of Watchmen showed superheroes like they had rarely been seen before. Alan Moore’s classic graphic novel takes it back to the ’40s and ’60s, where superheroes became outlawed by the government and started living in retirement in the midst of world war. As the story unfolds, you see the characters going through a series of issues in their personal lives and how that affects their roles as superheroes. Through powerful storylines, interesting character backstories, and some pretty amazing artwork, Watchmen has gone down as one of the best graphic novels of all time. If you started off with the 2009 film adaptation, or haven’t been exposed to the series at all, get familiar immediately.
