Diddy Kong from Donkey Kong
Few video game characters cast a bigger shadow, literally, than Donkey Kong, the one-time villain and current Nintendo mainstay. That being the case, Diddy Kong had some massive shoes to fill when he was introduced for DK’s foray onto the Nintendo 64 in Donkey Kong Country. Surprisingly, the diminutive Diddy managed to make himself valuable not by trying to emulate his hero, but also distinguishing himself from him. Where DK was big and strong, Diddy was small and nimble, meaning together, the pair could accomplish tasks neither could on their own. The added gameplay made Diddy a valuable addition — the fact that gamers now got to play as a baseball-cap-wearing monkey was just icing on the cake.
