10 Innovations That Changed Skateboarding

Skateboarding’s progress is well documented. From the time a few kids in Southern California first recognized the potential of transitioned surfaces to today’s technical wizardry, its changes have been many. While skaters themselves have pushed the sport forward, the equipment they use from decks onward has played a major role in its evolution.

Without the advent of the urethane wheel, would it have been possible to ride banks and pools? Had boards not become bidirectional in the early ‘90s, would street skating have advanced as it did?

It’s tough to say what skateboarding would look like without these innovations. Maybe we would be struggling to learn tricks on clay wheels or still only toying with the idea of riding switch. Here’s how they, and others, changed everything.
