7. EWI woodwind synthesizer
The EWI, the most popular “wind synth” today, is still unknown to the majority of music fans. It looks like a saxophone the Jetsons would play, and basically works like that, too. Functioning similar to a keytar, the EWI measures breath and fingering positions just like a sax, trumpet or oboe, and then plays corresponding sounds through software. Compatibility issues with popular software, a steep learning curve, and its intimidating presence has kept the wind synth under wraps, for now.
