The harpsichord used to be a go-to instrument for people learning to play music. Its harp-like sound and the ability to just press a button to strum the chord you want made it popular in old school folk music—Dolly Parton was known to carry one on stage. In the 1980s, the synthesizer version of the harpsichord, the omnichord was introduced. With a similar ease of play and a variety of cool sounds, the omnichord could have taken off, but for some reason, it didn’t. Then again, the Gorillaz did heavily sample one of the omnichord presets for their track, “Clint Eastwood,” in some ways making it the most famous sounding instrument on the list.
