One of the most successful and unique filmmakers out, Spike Jonze is known for his absurdist and nostalgic storytelling. Whether he’s making music videos for the Beastie Boys and Weezer that call back to ‘70s cop shows or The Fonz and Happy Days, or bending minds with his most recent film Her and the surreal Being John Malkovich, his work is steeped in satire, humor, and the human condition.

Spike didn’t take the traditional path to becoming a filmmaker; in fact his trajectory had more to do with documenting some of the most exciting subcultures in the United States in the ‘80s and ‘90s, before he ever had a screenplay made into a film. Prior to the awards and accolades, Spike was out photographing BMX freestylers and skateboarders for national print magazines, directing skate videos, and working with his friends to create new publications.
