J. Dilla

Recognized and respected by a smaller number while he was here, J. Dilla has finally earned his rightful place in history. Gifted with rhythm at an age where most children are just learning to talk, Dilla wound up working with The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul early into his 20s. His group Slum Village paved the way for Detroit’s underground, with him then going on to work amongst avant-garde elite including Common, Erykah Badu, Bilal, and Black Star, aka Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Although much of his new audience came after Donuts, his final beat tape with Stones Throw Records, Dilla’s name lives on as an urban legend nonetheless.
