10. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
While Nine Inch Nails’ precursor to The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, was a massive success, Trent Reznor wasn’t content. Deciding to form his own label under Interscope after leaving TVT and touring relentlessly, Nine Inch Nails channeled their aggression and frustration into a multi-platinum follow-up. While the signature industrial sound of the band remained the crux of the songs, Reznor took inspiration from both David Bowie’s Low and his love of heavy metal. But while the album might have been inspired by anger, it showed Nine Inch Nails becoming more tuneful, exploring a deeper range of sound that rivals their debut to many fans and critics.
