Early 1990s: Flannel and Grunge
Style Icons: Nirvana
The nostalgic apparel we’re currently calling “vintage” was the core style of early ‘90s grunge. Nirvana’s debut on the music scene brought the style from Seattle to the MTV era. Loose-fitting flannel shirts, broken-in cardigans, and probably a few skipped showers was how those who embraced grunge chose to identify themselves. In a nutshell, it was basically a hippie revival with teen angst and social awareness in place of the peace and love vibes.
