In the ‘80s, the skate shoe market was far from what it would become only a decade later. When Airwalk came onto the scene in 1986, vulcanized shoes were still the norm, but while its first models were clearly inspired by Chuck Taylor All Stars, its later designs like the Prototype series — cup-soled high-tops with heavy-duty rubber ollie protection and the occasional lace saver — became synonymous with the brand and skateboarding in general. You probably wouldn’t want to skate in these today, but they’ve been reissued for the hardcore ‘80s apologists among us.
