A Retrospective on the MF Doom x Nike SB Dunk High

Beyond the mask of UK born, New York-raised hip-hop lyricist and emcee master, Daniel Dumile, better known as MF Doom, comes his most recent accomplishment... A signature Nike shoe that is sure to turn heads. The hip-hop artist, most famously known for never showing his face while on stage, has donned the persona of Marvel Comic's 'Doctor Doom' using a super villain-looking gladiator mask for the better part of his career. As a London transplant, he entered the hip-hop scene in the early '90s as Zev Love X, forming the group KMD with his younger brother. A few years after being signed, his brother was hit by a car and sadly passed. This tragedy led Doom to retreat completely from the hip-hop world until the late '90s. Doom described this time in his life by saying, “I was damn near living homeless, walking the streets of Manhattan, sleeping on benches.”

Doom was down but far from out! After retreating from New York City for a period of years to recover from his wounds, he re-entered the hip-hop scene in Manhattan. Doom started by rapping at open-mic nights with a stocking over his head to hide his identity. He swore revenge on the industry that deformed him and that is when he truly adopted his current persona of MF Doom. Going through a couple design changes over the years, the mask now resembles the one from possibly one of the most badass characters ever created, Maximus Meridius, of the film Gladiator.

The maniacal mastermind released his first full-length LP Operation: Doomsday in 1999 and has been going strong ever since. No stranger to collaboration, Doom has since gone on to release music with Danger Mouse (Danger Doom); with Jneiro Jarel (JJ DOOM); and with Madlib (Madvillian).

From there, Doom took to producing music. He started a project with legendary artist Ghostface Killah, first in 2006, on his albums Fishscale and More Fish. And just a couple months ago, Ghostface recently hinted they would be dropping another new, full-length collaboration as early as the end of 2013.

You can even hear Doom on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Not only has he released music with them in the past, but he has also done voice-over work for Perfect Hair Forever and The Boondocks. Doom is clearly a force to be reckoned with, which makes the newest addition to his resume that much more epic.

I give you the new MF Doom x Nike Dunk high SB, designed by Frenel Morris. Like MF Doom, these Nike SB High Tops are fresh, limited, and a must-have for any MF Doom fan. The shoe features a nice combination of dark shades utilizing blacks, grays, and silvers. Doom added some flavor with contrasting red laces with ”Doom” stitched on the ankle along with a custom mask logo on the tongue. Through the outsole, a drawing of a villain wearing Doom’s mask can be seen. If you haven’t already copped these, please make sure to go out and grab some as I promise you wont regret it.
