10. Pamukkale in Turkey
Pamukkale means “Cotton Castle” in Turkish and is called this because of the site’s white travertines and hot water springs. What look like snowy banks and icicles are actually calcium carbonate precipitation from the hot springs that create these magical-looking structures. Many people visit the 17 hot springs at Pamukkale — varying in temperature from lukewarm to boiling — in an attempt to cure ailments such as high blood pressure, eye and skin issues, and circulation problems, but the beauty of the site is equally intriguing to a number of other people.
