KAWS began his artistic career writing graffiti in his hometown of Jersey City. Later, he graduated to parts of Manhattan as well, tagging walls and freight trains. He enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in New York City to study illustration in the early ‘90s, and during that time, he started altering bus shelter ads, adding his inflated skull, cross bones and crossed out eyes to models’ faces. Once he received his degree, things really got started, and that’s where our list comes in.
