3. The First “Companion” Toy

After traveling to Japan and painting HECTIC’s new shop, the company offered KAWS the opportunity to produce his first toy edition, which was fabricated by the company Bounty Hunter. Released in 1999, the first toy was called “Companion,” which is now KAWS’s iconic character, and featured a Mickey Mouse-like body with the artist’s signature skull-and-cross-bones head. Other toy characters like “Chum” and “Accomplice” appeared after that, but “Companion” was KAWS’s first-ever toy figure conceived and produced.
