4. First Solo Exhibition

With KAWS’s success in Japan came the invitation to exhibit his work in the first solo show of his career in Tokyo. The 2001 exhibit entitled Tokyo First featured KAWS’s new series of paintings playing off of the popular animated TV show, The Simpsons, which he called “Kimpsons.” The inserted his paintings into plastic blister packaging to make them look like mass produced, generic products with help from BAPE’s Migo, who shortly after commissioned KAWS to make him an entire series of paintings based on The Simpsons.
