Games were still a hobby in 1977, but it was the Atari 2600 that made them a household name. Launched with games like Combat and Pac-Man — stored in separate cartridges, instead of in the system itself — the 2600 became a blockbuster. Atari kept the momentum building with games like Space Invaders, and it wasn’t long before “Atari” became a code word for video games of any kind.
