After the horde of game companies trying to copy Atari’s formula led to over-hyped games and disappointed customers, 1983 saw the video game market come to a screeching halt. Luckily, the Nintendo Entertainment System saved the industry by being two things: cheap to build and supported by exclusive games from up-and-coming studios. Storming North America in 1985, Nintendo’s gray box outsold all previous consoles and made the Super Mario Bros. instant celebrities.
