6. Super Nintendo Entertainment System 1991
Never ones to be intimidated, Nintendo followed up their previous console with a brand new style of gameplay: 3D. Games like Super Mario World, Starfox and Donkey Kong Country showed players a new dimension of gaming (literally), and while the battle between Sega and Nintendo defined the 16-bit era, the SNES won out. In fact, the system’s launch in Japan caused so much chaos that the Japanese government asked that future game releases be held on weekends — a practice still in place today.
