Tomoko Konoike - “Donning Animal Skins and Braided Grass”

After working as a toy and furniture designer, Japanese artist Tomoko Konoike has created a number of drawings and sculptures by experimenting with crystalline aesthetics. Her work is inspired by manga, pop culture, Noh drama in which actors wear special masks to convey different characters, and Shinto animism, a belief that spirits exist in animals, plants, and other natural phenomena. For “Donning Animal Skins and Braided Grass,” the artist wrapped a six-legged wolf sculpture in mirror shards, reflecting light in a magical way around its exhibit space.
