Daniel Arsham’s The Future Was Written at YoungArts Miami
Currently on display at YoungArts Miami is Daniel Arsham's The Future Was Written. Much like previous shows by Arsham, he takes pieces of modern culture and reoffers them as crumbling relics.
The Future Was Written explores the idea of the viewer as both the explorer and the explored. Mementos of everyday life are provided as pieces cast in chalk in mounds throughout the gallery space. Visitors of YoungArts Miami are encouraged to use the "artifacts" to adorn the chalkboard walls surrounding the installations to create their own cave paintings and hieroglyphics.
To accompany the "contradiction of space and time" existing on the ground floor of the gallery, the second floor offers an opportunity to get a glimpse of other calcified relics of present-time. An NBA basketball rack is joined by the gear of a championship boxer, Mercedes Benz steering wheels, a duo of payphones, and what appears to be an ossified American flag.
Daniel Arsham's The Future Was Written, curated by Franklin Sirmans, will be on display at YoungArts until December 11.
