This photo was taken when I was driving downtown for a shoot with Vuhlandes. We saw smoke billowing from a neighborhood on the side of the expressway and pulled off at the next exit to chase it. A lot of Detroit is full of urban blight, with many houses destroyed and burnt to the ground. Surely enough, the house on the corner of the block was on fire. Firefighters were already on the scene, but the closest two fire hydrants to the house weren’t putting out any water. Luckily, a nearby hydrant worked, but it took a bit longer for the firefighters to get things set up, which lost precious moments of the house maintining its structure. As the smoke poured out of the building, the wind blew it above the house next door when I snapped this picture. The light shining through the smoke looks really inspirational, like there’s still hope amongst this disaster.
