Interview: David Stoddard From Brixton
From hats to full apparel collections, Brixton has evolved as a brand and many are taking notice. We had the chance to sit down with Co-founder and Brand Manager David Stoddard to talk about Brixton’s roots, influences, and plans for the future. Check out what he had to say.
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for fun, and what’s your role at Brixton?
I’m from Oceanside, CA and I’m co-founder and Brand Manager for Brixton. For fun, I like to surf, skate, play music, shop vintage stores, and work on my house.
How did the brand start? Did you just wake up one day and decide to make awesome hats?
The short story is that I had always wanted to start my own brand since I was 14-years-old. Growing up, I was into a lot of different things, but didn’t want to be stereotyped as just one of them. So I thought it would be cool to create a brand that spoke to those kinds of people and to make products that let people express their individual styles without feeling stereotyped. When we started Brixton, my friends and I were into vintage-style hats, but we couldn’t find them. My partners and I thought hats would be a good niche to start with and then grow into an apparel brand.
As a brand with strong ties to skateboarding, how do you guys manage to stay relevant and popular in an already saturated market?
I think because skateboarding is where we started and because we’ve supported it from day one. We wouldn’t be where we are now without skateboarding. It influenced so much of who we are today. I think that just comes through naturally and those who know support it. We’re very thankful for the support!
It’s clear that music is a huge influence in your line. What are your top five bands or songs right now and why?
Music is a huge influence, but the top five can change based on whatever adventure or work you’re doing that day. I can tell you that my favorite band is The Clash. They were influenced by all genres of music and wrote songs incorporating everything they loved. I thought they did an amazing job at that and did it with so much passion.
Besides music where else do you draw inspiration from for the line?
We draw inspiration from many things like military, westerns, camping, and people watching, to name a few.
What can we expect from the future of Brixton? Where is the brand looking to go in the next five years?
Our goal is to continue making timeless, quality products.
