Meet the Designer Behind Gucci Mane’s Legendary Album Artwork: Cover Stories

As a dedicated Gucci Mane fan, it’s overwhelming trying to keep up with his seemingly constant stream of project releases. Not even his Wikipedia discography can adequately track his barrage of hits.

This week, he revealed the cover art for his latest effort, Trapology, which shows an iced-out, Gucci-fied Albert Einstein, ice cream face tat and all.

Twitter was stoked.

I knew it was my civil duty as a Gucci fan to track down the dude who just blessed the world with such groundbreaking artistry. After a bit of digging, I found KD Designz, the 19-year-old Atlanta resident who not only designs all of Gucci Mane’s album artwork, but has also composed covers for OJ Da Juiceman, Wiz Khalifa, and Soulja Boy.

I know you started working with Soulja Boy when you were in the eighth grade, which was around the time he was starting to get popular. How did that relationship form and what was it like to work with him?
I just used to make pictures and send them to him over and over until he’d see them. At the time, he had a MySpace page, and I started sending him pictures on there. It was really cool to be able to do artwork for someone who was that big at the time.

How did you get linked with Gucci Mane?
My homeboy Caveman introduced me to Gucci Mane. The first projects I ever did for Gucci were the Green Album, the White Album, and the Purple Album.

Were you a fan of his before then?
Oh, yeah. He’s always been my favorite rapper.

Do you do all of Gucci’s album cover art?
Yes, I do all of them.

Is it hard to keep up with his frequent releases?
My artwork always matches the title, so it’s not hard to keep coming up with ideas. Once they give me the title, I just brainstorm and come up with something.

Have you heard Trapology yet?
No, not yet.

Why Einstein?
When he gave me the title for it, Einstein was the first person that came to mind. I thought it’d be dope having Einstein portraying Gucci, with the jewelry and ice cream tat and all of that. I mean, he’s one of the greatest scientists that ever lived.

There are a lot of people calling this the greatest album cover of all time.
It makes me feel real good. It’s like the third one I’ve done this year that people are calling the greatest of all time.
