Check the Label: NY State of Mind
NY State of Mind is a heavy-hearted streetwear brand with one goal: to leave a meaningful imprint on the city that gave it its name.
NYSM’s founder, Massachusetts-bred Brett Stein, was raised on a diet of rap, skateboarding, and art. Though he grew up in the suburbs, he felt a strong connection with New York City’s rebellious attitude, and made the move to Brooklyn about 10 years ago. In 2008, he married his passions with his strong entrepreneurial spirit to birth a brand celebrating the city's effect on his creative senses. Stein spent a good amount of time as a street vendor, steadily building a buzz for NYSM. Much of the brand's ethos is derived from NY hip-hop culture, beginning with its title; “NY State of Mind” draws direct inspiration from Nas’ two-part classic, obviously.
With a simple logo that pays homage to the Big Apple’s regal nature, the label presents a wide variety of urban streetwear, from 3M reflective hoodies and beanies, to five-panel hats and bold graphic tees. They’ve also racked up a number of celebrity cosigns, including the NYC hip-hop heavyweights in Wu Tang Clan and Mobb Deep.
The brand has been known to couple hyped sneaker releases with matching garments, including a newly dropped crewneck sweatshirt that incorporates the same baby blue used in the remastered Legend Blue Jordan 11s.
You can pick up NYSM gear at a number of New York-based retailers, like Brooklyn Warehouse and Scrap Yard NYC. They also have all of their pieces available for purchase via their online store.
