5. Seabiscuit - $120,277,854
Seabiscuit was based on the mega-selling book by Laura Hillenbrand that successfully cast a thoroughbred horse, trainer, jockey and really, really rich guy as a scrappy team of underdogs. It tells the true story of the most popular athlete of the 1930s, who just happened to be a horse, and it follows a fairly standard “you’re nobody until somebody believes in you” plot. Between the book’s huge following, the glossy period production design, and the Oscar buzz — it was nominated for Best Picture — Seabiscuit was rolling in the dough, pun intended.
