R.A the Rugged Man Says Kendrick Lamar Is Not A Top 5 Lyricist
When R.A. the Rugged Man sat down with VladTV this week, the NY rapper said something interesting about hip-hop's current golden child, Kendrick Lamar.
After acknowledging that he was spoiled growing up in the hip-hop era of Rakim and Big Daddy Kane (and accepting that there will never be another era like it again), R.A. is still hesitant about the current hip-hop scene.
"Today, I don't think there's a lyricist making an impact or impacting the culture as much as Rakim did when he dropped," he explained.
"There's always going to be good music from every era. It's just right now all the biggest commercial artists, because there's so much marketing money put into it, most of the commercial artists aren't the better artists," he continued.
When asked specifically about Lamar, R.A. didn't hold back: "I don't think Kendrick is a top five lyricist. I think he's a top five lyricist in a commercial market. I think Kendrick is a very good lyricist, but I believe the reason he's so respected is because he has the Interscope machine behind him."
And then... "In my opinion, I think there's a lot of rappers that could slice up Kendrick."
