The Zumiez Couch Tour made a stop in New York City bringing a combination of skateboarding and music to Pier 26 on the Hudson River. AWOLNation was the headlining musical act, but before they took the stage we linked up with the bands frontman, Aaron Bruno, for quick Q & A about his musical influences, hobbies and more.
Tell us who you are and what’s going on today?
I'm Aaron, the architect behind AWOLNation. Today I'm here to play an amazing free event called the Zumiez Couch Tour. Growing up in the surf community and having friends and family in the skate world, I love giving back to that. Skate is always on the forefront of fashion and art in a lot of ways so its great to be involved with this and hopefully people like it.
How did AWOLNation start?
It's pretty boring. In a nutshell, this was the result of the other bands I was in not working out. It was time for me to get out there on my own and make songs how I wanted music to be recorded. It ended up working out and exceeding my wildest expectations. Now we're able to tour around the world and play shows like this. It's amazing.
What are your musical influences?
I don't have one, its everything. I'm even influenced by music I don't like. As far as music I love, it would have to be Public Enemy, Minor Threat, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Pantera, Prince, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, and let's not forget Neil Young. Neil Young is huge for me. I also love Krista Bark who sings "Lady In Red", one of my favorite songs ever. I like to channel it all and hopefully not make it too wack.
With the Couch Tour being about music and skate, do you skate or have any other activities you're into?
I surf. Surfing is my main thing. I sprained my ankle in the seventh grade when I ollied up a curb. My cousin is Mike Mo Capaldi and I'm so proud of him. I'm a fan of skaters because I cant to do it. I think skaters are artists. Their motions are artistic and stylish, plus they're always on the cusp of music and style.
If you weren't a musician what would you be doing?
I could have been a good lawyer. I'm blessed and cursed with the ability to convince people. I convinced three different record labels to believe in me when maybe they shouldn't have? Maybe that or something to do with surfing or the water. I really enjoy being in or around the ocean.
