Texting Lanes Are Officially a Thing

Are you obsessed with your phone? Having trouble focusing on life? You may want to consider making the move to Antwerp, in Belgium.

Mlab, a gadget-centered concept store, introduced texting lanes in the city’s center for phone-obsessed pedestrians. That’s right: a separate lane on the sidewalks designated solely to “textwalkers.”

Mlab claims the texting lanes are part of an effort to reduce the number of accidents linked to distracted walking, but I’m not sure if I’d categorize the initiative as practical or pathetic. While it’s keeping preoccupied walkers out of the pathways of attentive ones, it’s also feeding into our tech-consumed age.

Perhaps the most face-palm moment of the announcement was when a spokesperson said, “This causes collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could, unknowingly, even be endangering your own life while you ‘textwalk’ when you cross the street without looking up.”

Endangering your life? If texting while walking is really posing a threat to my existence, I think I’ll wait until later to confirm those dinner plans.
