Barbara Gordon - Girlfriend of Dick Grayson/Robin/Nightwing
First Appearance: Detective Comics #359 (January 1967)
Created at the request of the producers of the 1960s television series, Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, made her comic and television debut in 1967. Barbara is the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon and works as head of the Gotham City Public Library. The defiant crime-fighter is an ally of Batman and Robin, and eventually teams up with and becomes romantically involved with Robin, aka Dick Grayson, who later becomes Nightwing.
Coolest Version of the Character:
We know Barbara Gordon can hold it down as Batgirl, but her brains are just as impressive as her brawn. She graduated summa cum laude from Gotham State University, earning a Ph.D. in library science. The character was a strong female counterpart to Batman, and after being reinvented as the Oracle — following the events of The Killing Joke, in which the Joker paralyzes her from the waist down — became a role model and symbol of empowerment for people with impairments.
Version You Might Not Want to Date:
For the 1960s television series, Batgirl wasn’t allowed to engage in hand-to-hand combat, employing only Broadway showgirl style straight kicks. You may still want to date her, but it would be tough to continue wanting to fight alongside her.
