Elizabeth “Betty” Ross - Girlfriend of Bruce Banner/Hulk
First Appearance: Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962)
Betty Ross is the girlfriend and eventual wife of Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. While Betty is the love of Banner’s life, she is also the daughter of one of Hulk’s greatest enemies, General Thaddeus Ross. Betty initially meets Banner through her father, who was in charge of the top-secret Gamma Bomb Project that would ultimately transform Banner into the Hulk.
Coolest Version of the Character:
While Ang Lee’s Hulk starred Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross, fresh off her Oscar-winning performance in A Beautiful Mind, the 2003 film also featured countless unintentional laughs, a cartoon-looking Hulk, and very little action. Connelly’s Inventing the Abbotts co-star Liv Tyler would take over the role in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Though Connelly had a more complex storyline in her film, Tyler’s portrayal of Betty is much more devoted, loving and nurturing to Banner, who was played by Edward Norton. Tyler spent hours discussing Betty and Bruce’s backstory with Norton, who did an uncredited rewrite of the script and reportedly rewrote scenes everyday.
Version You Might Not Want to Date:
Betty Ross has often received Hulk-like powers over the years. In the late 2000s, she was made into the anti-heroine Red She-Hulk, but in Incredible Hulk #168 from 1973, the villain M.O.D.O.K. kidnaps Betty, and infuses her with gamma radiation in order to create a creature powerful enough to defeat the Hulk, transforming her into the dreadful and monstrous creature Harpy, which literally means a grasping, unpleasant woman.
