Jane Foster - Girlfriend of Thor/Donald Blake
First Appearance: Journey into Mystery #84 (September 1962)
Originally named Jane Nelson in her first two comic appearances, Jane Foster served as the Midgard love interest of Dr. Donald Blake, the mortal form of Thor. Foster has assumed a dizzying number of occupations through the years from a nurse, paramedic and doctor to the head of the department of Nordic Antiquities in a museum, a teacher and an astrophysicist. Basically, she is the Barbie of the Marvel universe.
Coolest Version of the Character:
The Thor/Jane Foster relationship is a lot less complicated in the Marvel films, thanks to mostly doing away with Donald Blake, although there is a nod to the character in the first film. In this update of the character, Natalie Portman plays an astrophysicist who falls in love with Thor over the course of two days, then waits two years for his return. Now that’s devotion. The chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman is strong enough to make it believable.
Version You Might Not Want to Date:
In order to save Jane’s life after an attempted suicide, Sif, Thor’s love interest in Asgard, chooses to merge their life-forces together. Talk about awkward. Two girlfriends in one body? “Heimdall! I know you can hear me. Open the Bifrost!”
