Lauryn Hill

No commentary pertaining to female emcees and their influence on hip-hop would be complete without a nod to Lauryn Hill. After her tenure within the Fugees, alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, Lauryn went on to release her solo debut project, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The 1998 release earned the New Jersey artist the number one spot on the Billboard chart and five subsequent Grammy awards, an incredible feat for any artist, regardless of their sex, background, or genre preference. After the effort hit shelves, Lauryn Hill was thrust into the limelight, and although we’ve yet to hear a sequel, Ms. Hill’s debut opus will go down as one of the greatest masterpieces in music.
