1. Groundswell - Brownsville
Groundswell is a non-profit organization that brings together primarily low-income New York City youth with professional artists to create uplifting murals, beautifying the city’s diverse neighborhoods to create a public dialogue on topics that are sometimes underrepresented. This summer, Brooklyn-based painter Misha Tyutyunik worked with a group of young residents from the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn to create a mural called “It’s Not a Dream If You Will It,” which references a quote by Theodor Herzl, and is appropriately located at 62 Herzl Street. The mural pays homage to Brownsville-born community leaders and celebrities, and encourages all residents of the neighborhood to become heroes of their community as well.
