The DxO One Turns Your iPhone Into a High-Quality DSLR

There are several products that aim to enhance the quality of pictures you take on your phone. Large attachable lenses and camera sensors are two of the most popular, however, neither is very practical, often being too bulky or unable to enhance the image properly. Fortunately there’s a new device that actually increases the quality of your photos and doesn’t weigh five pounds. Meet the DxO One.

Weighing in at 3.8 ounces, the One is a 20.2-megapixel camera with a one inch backside illuminated sensor and a high-quality lens. It has a two-step button on the top that focuses when half-depressed and takes a photo when fully pushed down. You simply slide down the One’s cover to turn it on, and pull it all the way down to access its built-in Lightning Jack. It takes video that can be stored on the Lightning Jack, so you don’t have to worry about phone storage. The One is supposedly very sturdy, too, and it swivels 60 degrees in every direction to let you take pictures from different angles.

The One also comes with a free companion app, which you will be directed to once you plug it in to any iOS device. The app will allow you to snap pictures in different modes including Action modes (sports, night, etcetera) and Advanced modes (aperture priority, shutter priority, Program and Manual).

The coolest feature on the One is a new format the DxO created called the Super RAW format. This format stitches four images into one to improve noise reduction and picture quality, especially in poor light. These files will have a .dxo extension, and can be accessed using DxO’s image processing programs like DxoOpticsPro.

The One is great because it essentially turns your phone into a DLSR without the bulk of other devices. However, this doesn’t come without a hefty price tag. As of right now, the One costs $500, which is more expensive than the Nikon D3300 (a low-end DLSR). But if you’re trying to make the most out of your iPhone, it’s definitely worth the price.

The One started taking pre-orders this week and will start shipping come September.
