1. Boombox (Mid-1970s)
During the rise of hip-hop culture, the boombox played a core part in spreading the word at a high volume. Whether it was hanging off the shoulder of LL Cool J or blaring Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” via Radio Raheem, there was no cooler way to get around with your music. Ironically, these things got bigger as time went on, specifically to accommodate the demand for a maximum sound output. Some popular models in pop culture include the Disco Lite ES-555, which was seen in videos for both Madonna and Lady Gaga, and LL’s signature Conion Technisonic TC-999.
