Juneteenth – June 19, 2014
The abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19th, 1865 was a pivotal moment in world history. Over 100 years later, it’s still considered a day to celebrate, commemorate, and really just remember how far we’ve all come as a nation. The annual Juneteenth festival in Houston always has something interesting going on, whether it’s smooth jazz tunes in the park or listening to readings from famous black authors. Who said getting a lesson in history couldn’t be fun?
