Word of Mouth: D.R.A.M. Gushes Over Posh Showers, Pancakes, Ice Cube, and J. Cole’s ‘Eyez’ Doc
Word of Mouth is a series where we get you guys onto cool things, via cool people. We’re talking to our favorite creatives, artists, and athletes about their favorite stuff in their lives right now—cool apps they’re addicted to, new albums they can’t stop bumping, new health regimens… anything goes. Prepare to be put on.
D.R.A.M. has had a great 2016.
This year, he’s earned his first Top 5 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Broccoli” (which has now also passed 100 million views on YouTube); released a successful debut studio album, Big Baby D.R.A.M.; hit the stage with soul queen Erykah Badu at the Soul Train Awards; just recently performed at his first Art Basel; and received his first Grammy nomination. This weekend, he’s set to blaze the stage with Joey Badass and A-Trak for Dew Tour in Breckenridge. Thanks to such a busy schedule, he admits he lives out of a suitcase.
“I’m not current,” D.R.A.M. says. “I’m busy so much, and every day goes by—I can really only harp on what’s happening in the now.”
Today, he’s in a swanky Airbnb house in the Hollywood Hills with a sprightly crew that’s just picked up food from LA hotspot Bossa Nova without him.
“You really got Bossa Nova, huh? Really? Aight,” D.R.A.M. interjects our conversation to bust his friend’s chops in his signature charismatic zeal. I can just feel his toothy grin through the phone. “He’s a real son of a gun,” he continues before cautioning his friend. “Watch, I’m going to get extra when I get mine. You’re going to be done with yours, and I’m going to get something that’s better.”
Though he’s only in his 20s, D.R.A.M. (which stands for “Does. Real. Ass. Music.”) is full of vibrant, funky soul. But while it’s tempting, don’t be quick to box the Virginia native into any one category—and quit calling him a rapper.
“I’m a singer who raps, if it must be marginalized,” D.R.A.M. says. “But honestly, we’re just giving bits and pieces at a time. You’ll see. I’m really excited for what’s to come.”
Airbnb Spots with Fancy Shower Options
The Airbnb that we’re staying at right now, in the Master bathroom—which is my bathroom—they have this shower [and shower heads] that literally come out from the sides, from the top, and it has the hose that you can just grab. I’ve never seen a shower like that—it hits you all different. It feels like a human being car-washed. It’s like three power joints on the side and one circular thing up on the top, and it’s a hose that hangs.
The Griddle Café in LA
This restaurant that’s right down the street from here—they have these pancakes that gotta weigh like three pounds. They’re like 10 inches in diameter, and they’re probably about an inch-thick apiece. They have all types of flavors to the point where you don’t have to put syrup on yours. The ones that I had were called [in a Tony the Tiger voice] “The Grrreat Pancakes” because they had Frosted Flakes, strawberries, whipped cream, and powdered sugar all up on them. It was so good.
J. Cole’s New Documentary Eyez
Yo, I’m not even going to front: As soon as I landed, I saw J. Cole had dropped a new video. The video is cool, but the songs?. Sheesh. He hit a home-run with that, as far as content and delivery. He wasn’t angry; it was all right. Everything was all right. He was dropping some jewels up there, boy. I have a huge respect for J. Cole and what he has built.
Getting to meet Ice Cube for Power 106’s Cali Christmas 2016
I get to meet the big homie Ice Cube today. I’m performing at this event called Cali Christmas, and it’s for Power 106’s annual Christmas show. It’s got me, MadeinTYO, Anderson Paak, G-Eazy, and the big homie Ice Cube. I actually got to talk to him on the phone the day before yesterday when I was at the station. He had called in, and I was randomly there at the same time. It was just crazy to hear him speak because it sounds like the Ice Cube that we all grew up on [laughs]. I promise to God, he said “Yay, yay.” It’s so lit. I cannot wait to meet this man.
