+Pool, pronounced “plus-pool,” a collaboration project between Family and PlayLab, will be the world’s first water-filtering floating pool in New York.
“It basically started with an idea that it would be funny if you could actually make a pool that would clean water to swim in the river,” says Wong. He notes that the crowd-funded project brought up questions about whether it was possible for two small offices to make something this scale.
Pitched to hit water in the summer of 2016, +Pool looks like four of your average rectangular pools combined in a plus-sign shape. “We just wanted lots of different people to be able to use it at the same time,” says Wong. “We also wanted something that looked unique, that was sort-of iconic and announced that this was an OK place to swim in the water.” Which makes sense. +Pool is not your ordinary community swimming spot—it floats.
