4. Pura Vida
Pura Vida sells colorful handmade string bracelets crafted by artisans in Costa Rica. The company was born after two friends from Southern California were on vacation met two locals in Costa Rica who were selling their unique bracelets on the street and offered to help sell them back in the States. Now the two Costa Rican artisans have expanded their staff to provide jobs to 30 others, have gone from selling about 30 bracelets a week locally to over 20,000 worldwide, and their work can be found in more than 2,500 surf shops, boutiques, and other retailers thanks to Pura Vida. In addition to creating jobs in Costa Rica, Pura Vida donates a portion of its proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation, which is dedicated to cleaning up beaches and oceans around the world.
