4. Software Synths
Guitarists out there might scoff at us putting software synths so high on the list, but the truth is, they can be so cheap or even free and so versatile, that there’s no reason you shouldn’t have a few in your arsenal. You can get straight piano and string sounds as well as weird ambient synths and heavy bass, and if you’re making electronic music, they’re utterly necessary, unless you’re buying hardware, which we’ll cover later. Some of our favorite and highly praised soft synths available for free are the versatile Crystal and the classic SH-101 synth copy TAL Bassline, and if you want something way more robust and are willing to pay for it, Native Instrument’s FM8 will keep you happy for a long time for about $200.
