10. Kool Moe Dee vs. LL Cool J
LL Cool J’s grand arrival was met with opposition in the early ‘80s, partly because he was one of hip-hop’s first solo superstars not attached to a group or crew. Old school icon Kool Moe Dee was one of the loudest voices to accuse LL of lacking originality, leading to a back and forth, golden age battle for respect. While Kool Moe Dee was a worthy competitor, it was songs like “Jack the Ripper” and “To the Break of Dawn” that would establish LL Cool J’s reputation as one not to be tested.
