3. KRS-One vs. MC Shan

Miscommunication and misunderstandings ultimately led to perhaps hip-hop’s most devastating defeat: that of MC Shan at the hands of KRS-One. Without a media outlet through which to clarify himself in the ‘80s, Shan was mistaken for saying the culture was birthed in his housing projects on “The Bridge.” Boogie Down Productions’s “South Bronx” put the city of New York on notice, and their subsequent follow up “The Bridge is Over” — birthed from radio DJ Mister Magic rejecting them — took harsh measures to ensure that MC Shan was shut down for good.
