The Ummah (1996)

Throwing two dudes from A Tribe Called Quest, hip-hop’s most eclectic collective of the early ’90s, together with the producer/emcee that made Slum Village underground legends ended up being a match made in heaven. Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and J Dilla blended a mixture of hip-hop and neo soul that cemented a place for each dude in the halls of hip-hop royalty. Of course, they also knew how to craft up some amazing remixes with the non-rapping musicians as well, including Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Jon B., among others. Although the group lasted for less than five years, the time they were together was spent making some iconic tunes. That “Got Til It’s Gone” remix was pure fire!
