Interview: Meet @DrewToonz, Who Does Funny Drawings and Gets Regrammed by Miley
Look, most of Instagram is garbage. Between pictures of people pretending they have glamorous lives, the never-ending parade of faux-motivational memes and steady stream of oh-so-tired latte art it’s a surprise that anybody uses the service at all. Just kidding, we’re such a narcissistic species something like this was pretty much inevitable.
But sometimes, something comes along that makes the whole thing worth it. In this case, we happen to be talking about animator/illustrator Drew Toonz, whose crude drawing and skewed sense of humor have made the ole IG an interesting place to visit again. We caught up with the Hawaii-based Toonz—who has worked with Volcom, surf brand Wave Riding Vehicles, and more—to talk TV, fine art, and celebrity co-signs.
What is the first thing you remember drawing?
I would draw the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man, dinosaurs, sharks. I drew a lot as a kid despite never having any art classes in public school.
If you could have one of your works placed in the Louvre which one would it be?
Maybe the comic I posted on Instagram with the most likes.
You're about to be left all alone on a desert island. You can take one type of art supply: what is it? Why?
I don't know if I would even care about doing art if I didn't have anyone to share it with. My audience is my biggest inspiration.
A TV executive asks you to reboot any cartoon you want. Which one do you pick and what do you do with it?
He-Man was big for me. I would do that and make it more modern and funny with rad music and celebrity cameos.
Who is the most famous person to co-sign on Drew Toonz?
Miley Cyrus followed me on Instagram recently and posts my comics. I got 5000 followers in one day from her.
Let's play a game of “Two Men Enter, One Man Leaves.” I'll name two characters and you have to decided who would win in an arm wrestle and why. Homer Simpson vs Peter Griffin:
Homer is an icon. Peter griffin is a wannabe.
The Cast of Game of Thrones vs The Cast of The Big Bang:
Have not seen either show, actually.
Casper the Friendly Ghost vs Spongebob Squarepants:
They tie and become bros and hang out at the Krusty Crab.
